First Plane to Break the Sound Barrier

On this day in 1947 pilot Chuck Yeager made the first supersonic flight in a Bell X-1 aircraft. Prior to this flight no airplane had exceeded the sound barrier. The Bell X-1 was dropped from a modified B-29 Superfortress Bomber to save fuel, and reached Mach 1.06.
