Stephen Jay Gould was born on this day in 1941. He passed away in 2002. Gould was a paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, and historian of science and was one of the most widely read popular science writers of his generation. He developed the theory of punctuated equilibrium with Niles Eldredge, which proposes that there are long periods of stability in evolution and only occasional periods where change and branching of new species occurs rapidly. Have you read any of Gould’s books? What do you think of his theory of punctuated equilibrium?
